Golf Bag Buyers Guide

As you are about to get yourself a brand new bag, the first thing to consider will be what kind of bag suits you best.

Bag types

Carry bags

Carry bags are ultra-lightweight and easy to transport, which can be very helpful on a golf course. They're designated for casual or recreational golf players and come with shoulder straps - kind of like a backpack. They provide you with greater freedom in terms of where you can take your bag, while many golfers also enjoy getting a bit of a workout by carrying the weight of their clubs around for the day. If you prefer walking on the golf course, you're going to love this type of bag.

Steve Mitchell

You may sometimes hear the term "Sunday Bags". They're a very light and flexible variant of carry bags that may be rolled up for storage without clubs. Their name comes from the fact that they're best suited to casual players who play occasionally – hence "Sunday".

STEVE MITCHELL

Stand Bags

Known as the most versatile, they're relatively lightweight, but not quite as light as pure carry bags (although most carry bags do now fall into the category of stand bags). They're suited for players that like to walk the golf course, but also for those that use a cart. The key feature is the legs that are attached to the side and base, which keep everything upright when the bag is placed on the ground while you take your shot.

Cart Bags

Designed specifically for golf carts (or trundlers), they have a base that you can attach to your cart. They're loved by competitive players and definitely have the most storage options on our list so far, as they feature various pockets. However, they are quite heavy.

Travel Bags

These bags are made for those players that like to take their clubs with them when they travel and provides superior levels of protection. They will keep your clubs safe during flights and other forms of transport. Travel bags usually feature a hard case and are known to be heavy.

Tour Bags

Tour bags have the most storage options of all, and also the most space, pockets, and dividers. They're ideal for professional players who need to carry more items than a casual player would. Oftentimes, tour bags are used by golf players who do not have to carry their own bag, as they are quite heavy.

After choosing the right bag type for yourself, take a quick look at the following:

Pockets

Almost every pocket in a golf bag has a very specific use, which makes it easy for you to decide whether you'll need that type of pocket or not. Many bags include things such as a lined pocket that protects your valuable belongings, or an insulated cooler pocket for your favourite drink. Before making your purchase, consider what kinds of pockets you're going to need.

Features

Modern golf bags come with a lot of features. Some of the more common are a glove attachment, a rain hood, a towel ring, or even an umbrella holder. All of these perks add up to granting you comfort while you're out on the course.

Strap System

Unless you're directly taking things out or putting them in, you will mostly interact with your bag by the straps. This is why choosing the right strap system is so crucial and can make or break your golfing experience.

If you're going to carry the bag around a lot, look for a bag with wide, comfortable straps that you will be able to adjust the length of. Keep in mind that cart bags will have fewer straps than carry bags - it all depends on your personal preference.

Choosing a Gym Bag

Gym Bag Features

There are a range of features that differentiate gym bags from your regular duffel bag. These features are specifically designed with the gym goer in mind and make transporting your gym gear that much easier. Common features include:

  • Separate breathable shoe compartment
  • Separate storage for wet items such as a towel
  • Range of pockets for valuables and snacks
  • Durable and weatherproof
  • Lightweight and compact

Gym Bag Materials

This depends largely on what you intend on doing with your bag. Just because it’s called a gym bag doesn’t mean it won’t be accompanying you to the park, out for a hike, or on weekend getaways.

The most commonly used materials in gym bags are nylon, leather, and canvas.  Leather is by far the most expensive and heavy, but is also the most durable. Generally leather is pretty impractical for being on the go. Nylon is breathable, waterproof, and durable, making this the preferred choice.

Types of Carry Straps

Most gym bags have two handles at the top, which will suit most gym-goers.  Others may prefer a smaller bag with a single shoulder strap, or those with two straps in the manner of backpacks. It really depends on how much gear you have, how you want to carry it, and what kind of look you prefer.

Mens Walking Shoes Buyers Guide

With so many different models of shoes out there, it can be quite trying to figure out which ones are right for you for a specific activity. Below is a guide to help you narrow down your search and pick the best pair of walking shoes for your needs.

1. Comfort

The more comfortable your shoes are, the more you will feel motivated to walk in them. This is why it’s important to try on different pairs of shoes and walk around the store to see how they feel.

Some stores will offer to measure your foot length and width to make sure you get the right size for your foot. If your shoe is too tight, this can lead to blisters, calluses and even toe deformities. On the other hand, if the shoe is too loose you will have a lot less support and risk more injuries.

You may also want to consider a shoe that has some cushioning inside that can mold to the shape of your foot and keep you feeling at ease for the entire length of your walks.

2. Foot Anatomy

One size doesn’t fit all when it comes to selecting a pair of walking shoes. Different shoes will cater to different needs. Whether you have flat feet vs a high arch or a wide foot vs a narrow foot can definitely be the deciding factor in which shoe you will want to pick.

3. Flexibility

Another aspect you should be looking for is a shoe that allows natural movement of the foot while you walk.

What you can do is gently twist the shoe on itself or try to fold it in half to see how flexible it is. Also, when you try them on, make sure you feel like you can do a proper heel-to-toe movement without feeling too restricted.

4. Walking surface

The shoe you choose will vary according to the type of walking surface. Do you tend to walk on asphalt around the city, on forest trails, or both?

If you are venturing more off the beaten path you will need a more durable sole as well as more grip. This may not be as much of an important point if you’re just walking around the city on even surfaces.

5. Ankle Support

This last point goes hand in hand with the previous one. If you’re sticking to even surfaces around the city, ankle support is not as important. However, if you’re doing lots of trail walking, a shoe with good ankle support becomes relevant as it will keep you feeling supported and you’ll avoid the risk of ankle sprains.

With all this being said, it’s important to try on the shoe and purchase the one that feels the best on your foot. Comfort is probably the most important aspect and what will make you keep going back for more walks.

Keeping all these aspects in mind, let’s have a look at five different shoes for men that are suitable for walking.

Mens Walking Shoe Reviews

#1 New Balance 857v2 - Mens Cross Training Shoes

TOP PICK

BUY AT sportitude

The 857v2 cross training shoe designed by New Balance is great walking shoe suitable for people with a wider foot. In fact, you can select a range of widths which is also great for people with orthotics.

This shoe is also very durable as it is made of leather. Breathability is not compromised even with the leather material as the DRI-EX lining of this shoe has moisture-wicking properties.

The sole also has a great grip which would make this shoe suitable for city walking as well as trail exploring. This shoe is also equipped with motion control technology which might give a more stiff sensation when starting out and take a bit longer to break in.

Pros
  • Suitable for people with orthotics or wide feet

  • Durable

  • Moisture-wicking properties

cons
  • Motion control technology makes shoe stiffer

#2 Saucony Echelon 2 Leather

BUY AT the athletes foot

Get ready to rack up those steps with the Saucony Echelon 2 for men which are the perfect mix of stability and support.

Saucony also reduced the drop between the back and the front of the shoe from 12mm to 8mm which will feel more comfortable and allow a more natural walk.

This resistant leather shoe is also suitable for orthotics as it is quite wide. There is also full-length cushioning inside the shoe for better comfort during those long walks.

One negative aspect is that the thick leather material may not allow as much breathability as other shoes in this review.

Pros
  • Resistant material
  • Suitable for orthotics
  • Comfortable cushion along shoe
cons
  • Less breathability

#3 GOWalk Max by Skechers

BUY AT skechers

The GOWalk Max walking shoes by Skecher are perfect for a comfortable everyday walk. They only weigh 215 g in a men’s size 9 which mean you will almost feel like you’re wearing slippers.

They also have a lot of cushioning with extra padding at the heel which is perfect for people with a more sensitive arch or with plantar fasciitis.

These shoes are also extra breathable being as the top part of the shoe is made of mesh fabric. This may be one of the downsides of this shoe if you are more of a trail walker as this decreases the stability of the shoe.

Pros
  • Lightweight (215 g, size 9)

  • Cushioned

  • Rubber sole

  • Flexible

  • Extra padded heel for added comfort

  • Breathable (mesh fabric on top part)

cons
  • Mesh material be less durable for rain or uneven terrains

#4 Gel Mission 3 Nubuck by Asics

best value

BUY AT sportitude

Asics designed this slick looking shoe specifically for low-impact activities such as walking. They are also a great fit for walkers who wish to do some light training in the gym.

Equipped with a removable cushioned sockliner as well as rearfoot gel cushioning, these shoes are sure to be comfortable for your long walks. The rubber outsole also allows for good grip and better durability.

One downfall of this shoe is that the black leather material may mark easier and will need more attention for day to day care. This shoe is still the best value for your money in this review.

Pros
  • Can used for walking and light gym activities

  • Rubber outsole provides good grip

  • Lots of cushioning with removable sole and gel hee

cons
  • Black leather material requires more maintenance

#5 Air Monarch IV by Nike

Mens walking shoe

BUY AT nike

The Air Monarch IV shoe by Nike is great for long walks on all sorts of surfaces as the rubber outsole provides traction and stability.

The upper part is made of leather which makes this shoe more durable, but also has perforations to keep it breathable on your long walks.

The Air-Sole technology also allows for a smooth cushioned walk on any surface. This shoe is also designed to be a little higher up on the ankle to offer more side to side stability on those uneven surfaces.

One of the only downsides of this shoe is the fact that it is on the heavier side weighing 425g which may feel less comfortable for some individuals.

Pros
  • Durable leather material

  • Stable with rubber sole

  • Breathable

  • Air-Cushion sole

cons
  • Heavier (425g)

verdict

All the shoes in this review are suitable for men who enjoy walking whether that would be for short or long distances.

The Gel Mission 3 Nubuck by Asics was deemed as the best value in this round-up thanks to it being a versatile shoe very suitable for walking as well as low impact activities in the gym. The top pick in this review would have to be the New Balance 857 v2 as it is sturdy, versatile and also allows people with flat feet or orthotics to wear them comfortably.

When choosing the next pair of walking shoes what matters most is comfort as well as well as your individual needs. Selecting the right pair will definitely increase your odds of racking up those steps every day!

Carry-On Luggage Buyer’s Guide

The Correct Sizing For Your Airline

This is absolutely the most essential part of picking the right carry-on luggage.  Whether you’re shopping Samsonite or the cheapest luggage you can find they won’t do you any good if they’re too large for your airline.

All airlines have their own carry on requirements, and there’s no standard size for carry-ons so make sure yours fits for your airline. Some airlines also allow a second carry-on that can be slipped under the seat in front of you, so pay attention!

Light And Easy To Transport

When you’re selecting carry-on luggage you want to ensure that it’s going to be easy to move around.  This means that your luggage needs to be light (but durable) and equipped with features that will keep you on the go.

Wheeled suitcases are a great option thanks to the ease of transporting them over long distances, like the airport causeway.  Carry-on backpacks are another choice that will leave your hands free while you keep your essentials on hand.

Durable Materials

One of the hardest decisions to make is to go with a durable design that will protect its contents, such as can be found with hard-sided pieces, or to go with a soft-sided material that will break down for easy storage when you reach your destination.

There are, of course, options between these two extremes, such as those that have a hard front and back but also have soft sides so you can flatten them easily.  There’s no right or wrong answer as to which is the best option, so long as it remains light and meets the sizing requirements of your airline.

verdict

All of these carry-ons can be a great selection for those looking at their next great adventure, but that didn’t stop us from picking out a ‘best of’ option from the list.  For us, the Kathmandu Jet 38L hits the sweet spot thanks to its durable design, ease of transport, and all around functionality that makes your trip a breeze!

Our “Best Value” selection out of the above list is the Caribee Fast track VI32L Cabin Bag. Compact, durable, and affordable it really hits all the marks for a great travel experience. It may not be a hard case, or even a partial hard case, but that's one of its biggest benefits and drawbacks in one go.

How to Choose an Electric Skateboard

Beyond subjective criteria regarding the design and colour palette, there are a few objective considerations to make when buying an electric skateboard. Here’s what you should have in mind.

  • Size: Matching the size of the skateboard to your own height is essential if you want to have good stance and balance. Starting from small to big, mini boards are great for youngsters over 100cm tall. Midi boards suit those taller than 135cm, while full-size boards are for teens and adults taller than 160cm.

  • Speed: A thing to remember is that the listed speed will unlikely match the real one. Manufacturers rate the speed based on a brand new motor and a lightweight rider. In reality, you’ll end up at something below the rated number. If you want to go as fast as possible, get a skateboard with a dual motor. These motors also retain higher speed uphill.

  • Motor: Electric skateboards come with hub, pulley, or gear motors; the former could lack acceleration and braking power, but are more durable than the pulley and gear ones.

  • Wheels: Check the overall robustness and sturdiness of the wheels. High-density rubber wheels will give you the best performance, as they glide smoothly and ensure excellent balance.

  • Battery life: Manufacturers rate their batteries runtime in km rather than actual time, and these are typically straight-line measurements. Depending on the type of road and obstacles, your battery may not take you as far. You should look for at least 10km per charge if you don’t want to be frequently losing power and needing to re-charge.
